# A Veterinary Vital Sign Time-Series Database Collected During General Anesthesia
Physiological recordings collected during inhalational general anesthesia in dogs and
cats at a veterinary hospital in Seoul, Republic of Korea, between January and
September 2026. The recordings were obtained during routine clinical care and were
assembled retrospectively.
- 226 anesthetic cases (191 dogs, 35 cats)
- 241 record files, about 369 hours in total
- Recorded with Vital Recorder from a Dräger Infinity M540 patient monitor, a Dräger
Atlan A350 anesthesia workstation (when connected) and an SNUADC analog-to-digital
converter for waveforms
## Files
| File | Contents |
| --- | --- |
| `clinical_metadata.csv` | One row per anesthetic case; species, breed, age, sex, weight, ASA class, procedure, inhalational agent, durations |
| `record_manifest.csv` | One row per record file; case, segment order, duration, devices, signal availability |
| `track_inventory.csv` | One row per file and track; device, record type, sampling rate, unit |
| `data_dictionary.csv` | Definition, type and unit of every column in the files above |
| `breed_summary.csv` | Case counts by species and breed |
| `procedure_glossary.csv` | English procedure descriptions with the original log entries |
| `vital/` | Record files, one per case (`1-1.vital`); cases stored as several files use suffixes (`1-32-1.vital`, `1-32-2.vital`) |
| `read_vital_example.py` | Example of reading a record file |
## Reading the data
```
pip install vitaldb
python read_vital_example.py
```
Files can also be opened with the free Vital Recorder software (https://vitaldb.net).
## Notes
- All timestamps were shifted so that each case starts at 2000-01-01 00:00:00 UTC.
Relative timing within a case, including gaps between files of the same case, is
preserved. Dates and times of care are not recoverable from the files.
- Identifiers of the animals themselves are not released, so cases cannot be linked
to each other; a small number of animals contributed more than one case.
- Available signals differ between cases. Some recordings contain monitor numerics
only; others add waveforms and anesthesia workstation data. Use
`vitaldb.vital_trks(filepath)` to check which tracks are present in an individual
file before loading it.
- Signals are released as recorded. No filtering, artifact removal, resampling or
quality screening was applied.
- Durations in `clinical_metadata.csv` come from the anesthesia log and are not
interchangeable with the length of the record files.
